Universal Orlando Resort is always evolving, always innovating, always improving. When it’s time to make room for new amazement, saying goodbye to old favorites is never easy. Here's a look back at some beloved rides, shows and attractions from the past.

Poseidon's Fury

Poseidon’s Fury took you on an archeological expedition into the deep blue sea to witness the colossal battle between Poseidon and his mortal enemy, Lord Darkennon. This spectacular special effects show closed its temple gates on May 10, 2023 to prepare for exciting new offerings for our guests.

When the spirit of Lord Farquaad returned to capture Princess Fiona, you teamed up with Shrek and his magical team of misfits for a daring rescue! The show took you soaring into your favorite fairytales, riding Dragon and battling royal henchmen to save the day. 18 years and 75 million guests later, we bid farewell to this fairytale in 2022 to make way for Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast - now open.

FEAR FACTOR LIVE

Based on the hit NBC series “Fear Factor,” Fear Factor Live brought daring audience members on stage to complete pulse-pounding stunts. These included the Desert Hat Ordeal in which snakes were placed onto contestants’ heads, the squid-tossing Pendulum Swing, and drinking Fear Factor Smoothies made of bugs and other stomach-churning ingredients. The live show was retired in December 2021, but the fear and memories will live on for years to come.

  • Before it was Fear Factor Live, it was The Wild Wild Wild West Stunt Show – an explosive, cowboy-themed performance.
  • Fear Factor Live was the first theme park attraction created from a reality television program.
  • All the ingredients used in the Fear Factor Smoothies were food-grade and approved for sale by the FDA.

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad

This swashbuckling show took place in a mysterious grotto where the mighty Sindbad and his wisecracking sidekick Kabob performed death-defying stunts to rescue the beautiful Princess Amoura from the evil witch Miseria and her ghoulish henchmen.

This rollercoaster ride within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter sent you twisting and looping across the sky as you rode aboard one of two dragons—an aggressive Chinese Fireball or a ferocious Hungarian Horntail. Dragon Challenge closed in 2017 to make way for Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

  • Dragon Challenge was actually two high-speed roller coasters—and each "dragon" offered a completely different ride.

Universal's Cinematic Spectacular

Attraction closed 2017
Set to a stirring musical score, synchronized fountains and pyrotechnics, this nighttime projection show gave an incredible look back at over 100 years of movie moments.

  • Universal's entertainment legacy can be traced back to 1906, when German immigrant Carl Laemmle opened his first nickelodeon theater in Chicago. He went on to help create the Universal Film Manufacturing Company in 1912.
  • In the 1930s, Universal became best known for its horror movies, including Dracula, The Mummy and Frankenstein.
Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankentein and other ghouls joined the ghost with the most at Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue in Universal Studios Florida.

Beetlejuice cranked up Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein for a Mega-Monster Rock Show filled with screamin' demons and wailin' guitars. The revue had its final show in 2016 in preparation for Fast & Furious – Supercharged.

Wet ‘n Wild® Orlando

Just minutes away from Universal Orlando Resort, Wet ‘n Wild® Orlando gave you more thrill rides and multi-person slides than any other Orlando water park. The park closed December 2016 in preparation for Universal Volcano Bay, a water theme park where thrills and relaxation flow in perfect harmony.

  • Wet ‘n Wild® was the world’s first official water park.
  • It was also the first to introduce speed slides to the world.
  • And it was the first to patent the trap door mechanism used on Bomb Bay, which dropped guests six stories at up to 25 mph.

You went behind the scenes at Disaster Studios and learned the secrets of disaster films from the "Master of Mayhem" himself, writer/producer/director/studio executive/self-proclaimed genius Frank Kincaid. Disaster! closed in 2015 in preparation for Fast & Furious – Supercharged.

  • The ride vehicle was a recreation of the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) subway system in San Francisco.
A group of people brave extreme weather including lightning, fire and a giant cyclone at retired Universal Studios Florida attraction TWISTER Ride It Out.

TWISTER…Ride It Out®

You stepped into one of the most action-packed movies of all time and felt what it was like to be a storm chaser, looking for a tornado right in the eye, grabbing onto the railing to "Ride It Out." Special effects wizards re-created the explosive force of nature at its worst. Twister closed in 2015 to allow for the completion of a new ride inspired by the popular Tonight Show segment, "Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon."

  • Twister's sound system ran at 110 decibels, as loud as a rock concert.
  • The main theater contained 54 speakers producing 42,000 watts, enough equivalent wattage to power five average homes.

Lucy – A Tribute

This loving tribute to the Queen of Comedy was a walk through the dazzling career of one of America's beloved comediennes, Lucille Ball. Visitors got a close-up look at the world's favorite redhead on screen and off. Classic shows, costumes, scripts and even rare home movies were part of the tribute. The Lucy tribute closed in 2015 to allow for the building of the interactive retail experience, the Hello Kitty Shop.

  • Guests can take photos and meet the Lucy strolling character each day along Hollywood Boulevard inside Universal Studios Florida. Times and locations can be found in the daily park map.

Jaws®

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, a giant fin sliced through the waves and you were suddenly face to face with three tons of Great White fury— Jaws®. The big beast left the park in 2012 to make room for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast

The evil Ooblar from the planet Yokian had stolen Jimmy's newest rocket creation: The Mark IV. You boarded your own rocket and followed Jimmy on a wild chase through your favorite Nicktoons, including SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Hey Arnold!, and Rugrats. This attraction closed in 2011 to make way for Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

Back to the Future - The Ride

Great Scott! Doc Brown sent you screaming through time and space on a 1.21- jigowatt adventure—in Sensurround, no less. You’d fly from 2015 Hill Valley through an Ice Age avalanche, into the clutches of a dinosaur and back to the future, all to stop Biff from altering the future. Doc and friends left us in 2007 to make way for The Simpsons Ride.

  • The Doc Brown strolling character is available for meet-and-greets in Universal Studios Florida.

Kongfrontation

Attraction closed 2002
When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, Kongfrontation was a main attraction. Kong was on the loose in Manhattan and riders were threatened as he grabbed their tram, dropping it after being fired on by police helicopters. Kongfrontation closed in 2002, replaced by Revenge of the Mummy.

Now there's an all-new way to experience the great beast. Discover Skull Island: Reign of Kong at Universal Islands of Adventure.

Fast Facts
Reminders of Kongfrontation can be found throughout Revenge of the Mummy. Look for:
  • Bananas painted on the wall
  • The tourist dummy at the beginning of the attraction wearing a hat that reads "Kong Rules"
  • A three-foot-tall golden Kong statue inside the treasure room of the attraction
